Annual Halloween Costume Contest
October 31

Halloween Ghouls, Gremlins, and Goblins
Welcome to Irvington!

Halloween begins at dusk for this annual event, which brings ghosts, ghouls, goblins, little witches, princesses, and superheroes to the Irvington Town Commons. It is one of the most exciting holidays for children because they can dress up as their favorite character and then roam the neighborhood trick or treating. Children under 13 years of age compete for the best costume in their age category for prizes and treats. It’s a fun-filled family activity for all to enjoy. “Irving the Pumpkin” will welcome everyone to the Irvington Town Commons, ready to shine his light on area boys and girls during the Halloween Costume Contest.

The annual event, organized by Irvington’s Village Improvement Association (VIA), will award a total of 18 prizes for the best costumes in six different age groups. Judges will consider entrants below 2 years of age, 3 to 4 years of age, 5 to 6, 7 to 8, 9 to 10, and 11 to 12 years of age. Children up to the age of 12 and wearing costumes are all welcome to join in the event. Ghouls, gremlins, goblins, and children wearing all sorts of costumes receive a goody bag of Halloween surprises. We look for the scariest, most creative, and most original costumes and we are never disappointed! The best three costumes in each category win a prize. Boys, girls, parents, and chaperones gather at the gazebo at the witching hour of 6:00 pm to line up with their age group. Judging begins at 6:15 pm.

Reminders for a safe Halloween: Make sure costumes, masks, and footwear fit properly. Check the eye holes in masks to ensure they are large enough for full vision. Check for loose clothing and capes that could easily brush up against jack-o-lanterns. Choose fabrics that are flame resistant. Test props for safety and non-toxic materials. Use reflective tape for dark costumes. Ensure children carry a flashlight and cell phone.

All children under the age of 13 must be with a chaperone.
