Annual Halloween Costume Contest
Halloween Ghouls, Gremlins and Goblins Welcome In Irvington! Halloween happenings begin at dusk at this annual event, which brings ghosts, ghouls, goblins, little witches, princesses and superheroes to the Irvington Commons. It is one of the most exciting holidays for children because they can dress up as their favorite character and then roam the neighborhood trick or treating. Children under 13 years of age compete for the best costume in their age category for prizes and treats. It is a fun-filled family activity for all to enjoy.
The Great Pumpkin is back on Irvington Commons, ready to shine its light on area boys and girls at the Halloween Costume Contest.
The annual event, organized by the Irvington Village Improvement Association (VIA), will award a total of 18 prizes for the best costumes in six different age groups. Judges will consider entrants below 2 years of age, 3 to 4 years of age, 5 to 6, 7 to 8, 9 to 10 and 11 to 12.
According to Denise Robertson of the VIA, all ghouls, gremlins and goblins of all ages will receive a goody bag of Halloween surprises. “Everyone under the age of 12 in a costume is welcome,” she said. “And the best three costumes in each category will win a prize. We’re looking for the scariest, most creative and most original costumes, and I’m sure we won’t be disappointed.”
Boys, girls and parents should gather at the Gazebo at the witching hour of 6:00pm to line up with their age group. Judging will begin at 6:15pm.
Reminders for a safe Halloween: Make sure costumes, masks and footwear fit properly. Check the eyeholes in masks to ensure they are large enough for full vision. Check for loose clothing and capes that could easily brush up against jack-o-lanterns. Choose fabrics that are flame resistant. Test props for safety and non-toxic materials. Use reflective tape for dark costumes. Ensure children carry a flashlight and cell phone.
All children under the age 13 must be with a chaperone.
